Our New Intern!
Lakewood UMC is delighted to welcome Kathy Nations as our intern from Perkins School of Theology!
Kathy is a lifelong Methodist and Texan. She is in her third year of the Master of Divinity (M.Div.) program at SMU Perkins School of Theology and a declared candidate for ordination. At Lakewood UMC, she is serving a nine-month internship in covenant with this church represented by a Lay Teaching Committee, mentor pastor Rev. Dr. Gayle Landis, and SMU Perkins through faculty advisor Dr. Thomas Spann.
When not commuting, in class, at Bridwell Library or Lakewood, Kathy spends time with her husband of nine years, Tom, who recently retired as a Battalion Chief in the Denton Fire Department. They are members of First UMC Denton. Their blended family comprises three adult children: Riley in Austin, Chloe in Denton, and Sarah who is married to Joshua, along with grandson Gavin who is in kindergarten.
Kathy holds a bachelor of fine arts (BFA) from the University of North Texas and is a registered nurse (RN). She is also a certified spiritual director (CSD), Disciple graduate and teacher, and an Emmaus pilgrim.
“My calling is to lead others through word and service to encounter God, by sharing gifts of creativity, insight, faith, and a passion for worship, preaching, and teaching. I believe every person needs to and can encounter the living Christ, and that through such experiences we realize who we are in God’s eyes, how we are loved and saved, and that the resulting freedom leads us to respond to God’s gracious love. Whether our experiences occur among others or in solitude, the Holy Spirit drives us out into the world for a life of joyful service and celebration with others. This is the connection of spiritual formation to actively loving God and neighbor.”
Kathy sees the nine-month internship at Lakewood UMC as an opportunity to put experience and learning into practice, and to receive responses and recommendations. Presently she is at Lakewood on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, with flexibility for changing needs and meetings or special events. She leads the “Imaging God” exploring how God’s creativity can be seen in principles of art and design that are reflected in our lives as created, creative beings. Another undertaking is the Lakewood Legacy, which delves into the history and culture of the Lakewood community and Lakewood UMC. She invites members to share their stories, photographs, artifacts, and suggestions for this quest that will culminate in the Lakewood UMC 90th anniversary celebration in spring 2016.
