Hymn Stories from the Choir Loft
With Lent upon us, I wanted to present to you the background of, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful hymns in our hymnal, What Wondrous Love Is This (UMH 292).
From the rural folks of the southern Appalachian Mountains comes what many consider to be the finest and most beautiful of the American folk hymns. Life was difficult for people living in the mountains, but they came together to sing, dance, and worship. Their music was passed down from generation to generation, never being written down. This anonymous text first appeared in print in 1811.
The first person to write down the tune we now call Wondrous Love was James Christopher, a gentleman from South Carolina. William Walker, also from South Carolina, collected and arranged folk songs from Appalachia and camp meetings. In 1835, Walker published a collection called Southern Harmony which contained this text and tune. His brother-in-law, Benjamin White, also published this hymn in 1844 in the well-known collection, Sacred Harp.

Peace and blessings,
Metro District Laity Day with Bishop McKee
This year’s Metro District Laity Day will take place on Saturday, March 25 from 9:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Spring Valley UMC. Conversation with Bishop McKee will focus on the Commission for a Way Forward, which was created by the Council of Bishops, at the request of the General Conference, to discover “a way forward for profound unity on human sexuality and other matters.” We hope you will join Bishop McKee and other Metro District laypersons as we discuss this essential matter facing our United Methodist Church.
Come enjoy a time together devoted to preparing ourselves for Easter. The class will meet on Sunday afternoons at 1:00 p.m. and will focus on a discussion of the parables of Jesus. Classes will begin on Sunday, March 5 and meet each Sunday through April 2. Each class will “stand alone,” so if you cannot attend all classes, that’s ok. There is no cost. Bring your Bible! Hope to see everyone there!
For over a decade, LUMC has participated in Amigos Days. Alongside other area Methodist churches (this year we have partnered with Northaven and Kessler Park), we paint and make minor repairs to the homes of people who are elderly or disabled who cannot afford the repairs. The volunteers for this program have painted and repaired over 400 homes. We need volunteers during the weekends of April 21-22 and April 28-29 to: help with the work (no skill required) and to provide drinks and snacks. If you are interested in helping out, contact Eva at email@example.com.
