The past month featured our Craft Fair and Trunk or Treat (which we held indoors last night due to weather concerns). Thank you to all our members for making these fun neighborhood events possible!

Pastor's Note

November is often a month in which we take time to reflect on the things for which we are thankful. And even in these past few months, I have found many reasons to give thanks to God for this church.

I am thankful for the incredibly warm welcome you have extended to Erin and me. I am thankful for your attitude of exploration in looking to the future and in jumping in to help restart programs like Children’s Church. I am thankful for your commitment to reconciliation among the LGBTQ community and among women who have experienced harassment and abuse. And I am thankful for your support in creative efforts to reach out into our community through events like our Blessing of Animals, Craft Fair, and Trunk or Treat.

And springing forth from that thankfulness, I am eagerly looking forward to another month of meaningful ministry. We will continue to celebrate God’s presence among us in worship, including our All Saints remembrance on Nov. 5, and in fellowship at our Choir Fundraiser Dinner on Nov. 11. I also look forward to the ways we can continue to live out justice and compassion in outreach to Puerto Rico and in deeper connection with Refugee Services of Texas. We have a lot going on and you can find more details about it below.

In the words of the apostle Paul, “I have heard of your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love toward all the saints, and for this reason I do not cease to give thanks for you” (Ephesians 1:15-16).

Volunteer Training

rst logo 2.jpg

As part of Lakewood's continuing commitment to serving refugees in the Dallas community, we will offer a training by Refugee Services of Texas on Monday, November 6, beginning at 7:00 p.m. Representatives from RST will help us learn how to be a Welcome Team for refugees arriving in the US for the first time. The training will last about two hours and will include an overview of what RST does to ease the process of refugee resettlement, followed by a breakdown of Welcome Teams and what their roles are in the resettlement process. Any person wishing to become a regular volunteer and have client interaction will need to bring $10 for a background check to be conducted by RST. We hope you will join us for this training; if you can't be here, we promise to keep you posted about opportunities to help us be a good neighbor to Dallas-area refugees.

Choir Fundraiser Dinner

Our annual choir fundraiser is coming up – Saturday evening, November 11, to be exact.  This event is to raise money to help pay for extra musicians for the Christmas cantata, as well as purchase music and pay for supplemental musicians throughout the year.  Even though we have a small music budget, the music ministry is largely self-sustaining.

This year’s event will feature a delicious buffet of food identified with Texas prepared by our own Chef Alan, followed by entertainment by members of the choir.  We will end with a dessert auction, presided over by talented auctioneer/attorney, George Freeman.

Tickets are $15.00 each for adults, and $7.50 for children ten and under.  Tickets will be available after church this Sunday, November 5, or you can e-mail to make a reservation.  Reservations are required so that our chef will know how many to prepare for.

Services Online Now

Now you can relive that amazing choir anthem or worship with us from afar! Our worship services are now online. We are live streaming worship on Facebook, so you can watch it as it happens on Sunday morning. But we also have recordings of the service both on Facebook right after the service and on our website during the following week. These links will take you to our Facebook page and to where those videos are posted on the website:

Puerto Rico Disaster Relief

Over the past several weeks we have lifted up the people of Puerto Rico in prayer in response to the devastating hurricane damage they have suffered. As a continuing act of prayer, we have had a wonderful opportunity open up in which we can send some goods as a small act of support. Gail Davis has a personal contact on the island to whom she has been able to successfully send a package. The lady's name is Yazdel Molina.  She is a US Postal Service employee and lives in Arecibo, PR, one of the worst-hit areas.  She has two 20+-year-old girls, a special needs son, and elderly parents.

We are going to send a couple of packages of gloves, masks, first aid kits, and hygiene items to Yazdel to help her and her community. In order to get the right amount of items, we will be collecting money and purchasing the items needed. We will use any money collected at our communion rail offering this week, and if you would like to make extra donations you can write Puerto Rico Aid in the note of your check and send it to the church by November 12.

We will, of course, continue to be in prayer for the people of Puerto Rico and all those around our country who are affected by natural disasters and we trust that God will use our efforts to make a big difference to some of the families affected.

Hanging of the Greens

Advent is coming up! Join us on Sunday, November 26 to decorate our Christmas trees in anticipation of the season. The church will provide lunch, and we hope you will come enjoy a time of fellowship and festivity with us!
